State Rep. Celeste’s PTSD bill hears testimony in House
COLUMBUS, Ohio – State Representative Ted Celeste (D-Grandview Heights) today presented sponsor testimony on House Bill 294, bipartisan legislation to guarantee that soldiers returning to Ohio from serving our country will be covered by private health insurance policies regulated by the Ohio Department of Insurance for the diagnosis and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
“If we are to honor the service of our brave servicemen and women, we need to respect and respond to their needs,” Celeste stated. “This bill will ensure that our returning troops are given the care they need and deserve.”
According to the Ohio National Guard, approximately 16% of troops returning to our state report suffering from PTSD. It is widely believed, however, that the actual percentage of servicemen and women with PTSD is likely much higher. With second and third deployments of Ohio’s National Guard units imminent in the Iraq war, it is expected that this figure will continue to increase.
House Bill 294 is all-inclusive, covering the diagnosis and treatment of PTSD for those who have experienced non-combat related trauma as well.
